Why Is ExpressVPN So Slow?

Workaround available All platforms Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

A VPN adds some overhead, but big slowdowns usually come from a distant server, the wrong protocol or poor ISP routing. Connect to a nearby recommended location, use Automatic/Lightway UDP (with Lightway Turbo on Windows), and refresh the connection.

Most likely fix: Update the app.

Symptoms

Downloads, streaming or browsing are much slower with ExpressVPN on than off, or speeds drop in the evening or on certain servers.

Why it happens

  • Server location far from your physical location
  • Protocol not suited to your network (e.g. OpenVPN TCP)
  • Temporary routing problems between your ISP and the server
  • Outdated app missing protocol improvements

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update the app

    1. Install the latest ExpressVPN version; Lightway Turbo and OpenVPN data-channel offload arrived in 2025 updates
  2. 2. Refresh the connection (iOS/Android)

    1. While connected, tap the refresh button (two circular arrows) on the map
    2. The app reconnects without exposing your traffic
  3. 3. Connect to a closer server

    1. Open the location list
    2. Pick a location near you from the Recommended tab
    3. Test speed again
  4. 4. Use Automatic or Lightway – UDP

    1. Open the protocol setting
    2. Select Automatic (usually picks Lightway) or Lightway – UDP
    3. On Windows, keep Lightway Turbo enabled for the highest throughput
  5. 5. Report the slow connection

    1. Help > Contact Us > Issues with the VPN service > VPN connection is slow
    2. Submit the form with diagnostics
