Filmora Keeps Crashing

Workaround available Windows, Mac Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Filmora crashes are most often caused by outdated graphics drivers, GPU acceleration conflicts, heavy 4K timelines or a buggy build. Wondershare's official fix is to update the GPU driver; then update Filmora, test with hardware acceleration off and use proxies.

Most likely fix: Update your graphics driver.

Symptoms

Filmora freezes or closes during editing, when playing the timeline, when running an AI tool, or when opening a project. Work since the last save may be lost.

Why it happens

  • Outdated graphics driver (Wondershare's most cited cause)
  • Hardware acceleration incompatible with your GPU
  • Not enough RAM or VRAM for 4K or heavily stacked timelines
  • Bugs in a specific Filmora build (e.g. Smart Scene Cut crash fixed in 14.2.5)
  • Codec packs or decoder conflicts

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update your graphics driver

    1. Press Start, type dxdiag and press Enter
    2. Note the GPU name on the Display tab
    3. Install the newest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, or the laptop maker's site for notebooks
  2. 2. Update Filmora to the latest version

    1. Help > Check for Update
    2. Install and restart; Wondershare's fixed-issues log shows many crashes patched in point releases
  3. 3. Test with hardware acceleration off

    1. File > Preferences > Performance
    2. Untick both hardware acceleration options and click Apply
    3. Restart Filmora and see if the crash repeats
  4. 4. Use proxies and render preview for heavy footage

    1. File > Preferences > Performance > enable automatic proxy creation for high-resolution media
    2. Use File > Render Preview on effect-heavy sections
  5. 5. Remove conflicting codec packs

    1. Uninstall third-party codec packs you don't need
    2. Reboot and open Filmora again
  6. 6. Turn on project backups

    1. File > Preferences > Folder
    2. Set a Backup Project location, ideally on another drive
    3. Open the backup copy if a crash damages the project
