Filmora Project Won't Open

Workaround available Windows, Mac Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

When a Filmora project won't open, update to the latest version (some builds broke project loading) and open the automatic backup copy from the folder set in File > Preferences > Folder.

Most likely fix: Update Filmora.

Symptoms

Filmora crashes or hangs while loading a project, shows an error, or opens it with missing titles or media.

Why it happens

  • Bugs in specific builds (Wondershare fixed projects not opening after V13.6.13 in 14.1.5)
  • Project damaged by a crash during saving
  • Source media moved or renamed
  • Very large projects with heavy Full HD/4K media

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update Filmora

    1. Help > Check for Update
    2. Install the latest version and reopen the project
  2. 2. Open the automatic backup

    1. Go to File > Preferences > Folder
    2. Click Browse next to Backup Project to open the backup folder
    3. Open the newest backup copy
  3. 3. Relink moved media

    1. Put source files back in their original folders, or relink them when Filmora asks
  4. 4. Split huge projects

    1. Export finished sections as MP4
    2. Import those into a new project to finish the edit
