Filmora Lagging and Slow Playback

Workaround available Windows, Mac Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Filmora lags with 2K/4K footage and stacked effects. Turn on hardware acceleration and automatic proxies in File > Preferences > Performance, render effect-heavy sections with Render Preview, and delete old render files.

Most likely fix: Enable hardware acceleration.

Symptoms

Timeline playback stutters or drops frames, the preview lags behind the audio, and scrubbing is slow.

Why it happens

  • High-resolution (2K/4K) source files
  • Many effects, transitions or layers
  • Hardware acceleration turned off
  • Low RAM or background programs
  • Disk full of old render files

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Enable hardware acceleration

    1. File > Preferences > Performance
    2. Tick 'Enable Hardware Acceleration for video rendering and playback' and 'for video decoding'
    3. Click Apply
  2. 2. Create proxies for high-resolution media

    1. File > Preferences > Performance
    2. Enable automatic proxy creation for high-resolution media
    3. Click Apply; the final export still uses original quality
  3. 3. Render preview heavy sections

    1. Click the Render Preview icon on the right of the toolbar or use File > Render Preview
    2. Optionally enable Background Render in Preferences > Performance and choose a delay
  4. 4. Clear render cache

    1. File > Delete Preview Render Files
    2. Enable auto-delete of render files on project close under Preferences > Media Cache
  5. 5. Lower the load

    1. Close other programs while editing
    2. Check you have at least 8 GB RAM, as recommended
