iA Writer Not Working? Common Errors & Fixes

iA Writer syncs through Apple's iCloud Drive, so sync failures almost always come from iCloud settings, the network or a stuck system process. Restarting all devices and confirming iA Writer is enabled under iCloud Drive fixes most cases.

If documents exist in Finder or the Files app but iA Writer's Library doesn't list them, the Library index is usually out of date. On Mac, deleting index.db and relaunching rebuilds it.

On iOS, iA Writer reaches Dropbox only through the Files app. Some Dropbox versions don't auto-sync externally edited files, so open the folder in the Files app to force a refresh before editing.

On iPhone and iPad you can open individual Google Drive files in iA Writer but users report the Google Drive file provider doesn't allow adding a whole folder as a Library location. Use iCloud or Dropbox for folder sync.

iA Writer for Android was discontinued in September 2024. New Google Drive connections are blocked and Dropbox access stopped working on 1 January 2026, so the fix is to export your files and move to another editor.

iA Writer for Windows now uses iA Account sign-in instead of license keys. If it asks you to start a trial after you paid, you're almost always signed in with a different email than the one you bought with.

If iA Writer for Windows won't launch or shows an empty window, a missing .NET Framework 4.8 or Visual C++ Redistributable is the usual cause. Install them, restart, and reinstall cleanly if needed.

When a Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud location stops opening in iA Writer for Windows, removing it from the Library and adding it back usually fixes it.

iA's support says 'cannot save' errors on Mac are usually triggered by App Store copy protection after moving the app to another Mac or a hardware/network change. Deleting and reinstalling from the App Store's Purchased section fixes it.

Images in iA Writer are Content Blocks: a file path on its own empty line, pointing to a file in the Library. Wrong paths, spaces/dots in folder names, or opening the file in another Markdown app are the usual reasons images don't appear.

iA Writer's PDF uses whatever template is selected in Preview, and page setup, headers and footers live in template settings. Changing the template and page size fixes most 'PDF looks wrong' complaints.

iA Writer keeps local backups and iCloud version history, so most lost or overwritten text can be restored with Browse Backups or Revert To, and deleted iCloud files can be recovered at icloud.com within 30 days.

High CPU in iA Writer on Mac comes from indexing folders added to the Library. Adding very large folders (or a whole drive) makes it worse — remove them, and reinstall if the app stays unresponsive.

If double-clicking a Markdown or text file doesn't open iA Writer, the file extension isn't associated with it. Change the default app for .md and .txt in Finder or Windows Settings.
