iA Writer Dropbox Not Syncing on iPhone and iPad

Workaround available iPhone, iPad Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

On iOS, iA Writer reaches Dropbox only through the Files app. Some Dropbox versions don't auto-sync externally edited files, so open the folder in the Files app to force a refresh before editing.

Most likely fix: Refresh the folder in the Files app.

Symptoms

Changes made on a computer don't show in iA Writer on iPhone/iPad, new files are missing, or edits create conflicted copies.

Why it happens

  • Dropbox Files-app integration not refreshing in the background (iA documented this for Dropbox 380.3)
  • Dropbox folder added before Dropbox supported folder access in Files
  • Dropbox location hidden in the Files app

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Refresh the folder in the Files app

    1. Open the Files app
    2. Browse to Dropbox and open the folder with your documents
    3. Wait for files to download, then return to iA Writer
  2. 2. Update the Dropbox app

    1. Update Dropbox from the App Store
    2. If the problem persists, report it to Dropbox Support as iA recommends
  3. 3. Re-add the Dropbox folder as a Location

    1. In iA Writer go to the Library root and tap Edit
    2. Tap Add Location and tap Browse to reach the file browser root
    3. Tap Dropbox (if missing: tap … > Edit and enable it)
    4. Select the folder and confirm
  4. 4. Use iCloud for Apple-only workflows

    1. If you only use Apple devices, store documents in iCloud Drive, which is iA's recommended option
