iA Writer Lost or Overwritten Document

Workaround available Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

iA Writer keeps local backups and iCloud version history, so most lost or overwritten text can be restored with Browse Backups or Revert To, and deleted iCloud files can be recovered at icloud.com within 30 days.

Most likely fix: Browse Backups (iPhone/iPad).

Symptoms

A document is blank, older content overwrote newer edits, or a file was deleted.

Why it happens

  • Sync conflict between devices
  • Accidental deletion
  • Files stored only on device and app removed

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Browse Backups (iPhone/iPad)

    1. In the Library, long-press the document, folder or Location
    2. Choose Browse Backups, pick a timestamp and tap Restore
  2. 2. Revert to an iCloud version

    1. Mac: open the file and choose File > Revert To… > Browse All Versions
    2. iPhone/iPad: swipe left on the file > More… > Browse Versions > Revert
  3. 3. Restore deleted iCloud files

    1. Sign in at icloud.com
    2. Use Data Recovery > Restore Files, or iCloud Drive > Recently Deleted (within 30 days)
  4. 4. Restore from Dropbox/Google Drive/OneDrive

    1. Use the provider's web trash or version history (usually 30 days)
