iA Writer Android Not Working

iA Writer for Android was discontinued in September 2024. New Google Drive connections are blocked and Dropbox access stopped working on 1 January 2026, so the fix is to export your files and move to another editor.

Symptoms

Can't connect Google Drive, Dropbox locations stopped loading, app missing from Google Play, or purchase can't be restored.

Why it happens

  • App removed from sale (v3.1.4) in September 2024
  • Google revoked iA Writer's Google Drive access; full access requires a yearly CASA audit
  • Dropbox no longer supports the SDK used in Writer for Android (from 1 Jan 2026)
  • No further updates for new Android versions

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Back up your documents now

    1. Keep the app installed until files are copied
    2. Public files are in /storage/emulated/0/Documents/iA Writer
    3. Use the Export/share option to save private in-app files to another location
    4. Don't uninstall before exporting — local documents can be deleted

  2. 2. Keep using an existing Google Drive connection

    1. iA says users already connected to Google Drive aren't affected
    2. Don't disconnect it — reconnecting is blocked

  3. 3. Move to a supported editor

    1. Copy the Markdown files to a synced folder
    2. Open them in a maintained Android Markdown editor such as Obsidian
