iA Writer Images Not Showing

Workaround available Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Images in iA Writer are Content Blocks: a file path on its own empty line, pointing to a file in the Library. Wrong paths, spaces/dots in folder names, or opening the file in another Markdown app are the usual reasons images don't appear.

Most likely fix: Insert the image the supported way.

Symptoms

Images show as a plain path in the editor, are missing in Preview/PDF, or vanish when the file is opened in another Markdown app.

Why it happens

  • Content Block not at the start of an empty line
  • Image file is outside the iA Writer Library
  • Path typos, spaces or dots in folder names
  • Other Markdown apps don't support iA's Content Block syntax

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Insert the image the supported way

    1. Drag the image from Finder/Library into the document, or use Format > Add Content Block (Command Palette: Shift-Cmd-P)
    2. Make sure the block starts on its own empty line
    3. Type / to autocomplete a path to a file in the Library
  2. 2. Simplify the path

    1. Keep images in a subfolder like images/ next to the document
    2. Start paths with ./ and avoid spaces and dots in folder names (use - or _)
  3. 3. Use standard Markdown for portability

    1. If files must render in Typora/Marked, use ![caption](images/file.png)
    2. Or reference images hosted at a full URL
