Jira Automation Rule Not Triggering
Workaround available Web (Cloud and Data Center) Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
A Jira automation rule that never runs is usually disabled, scoped to the wrong project, waiting for an event that never fires, or throttled by the plan's monthly automation limit. The audit log tells you which.
Most likely fix: Read the audit log.
Symptoms
Nothing happens when the trigger should fire; audit log shows 'No actions performed' or nothing at all; rule worked before and stopped mid-month.
Why it happens
- Rule disabled or scoped to a different project
- The expected event isn't fired (e.g. transition fires a different event)
- Wrong trigger (e.g. 'Issue updated' instead of 'Issue assigned')
- Scheduled JQL rule with 'only include issues that have changed since last run' ticked
- Conditions filter out the issue
- Monthly automation limit reached, so the rule is throttled
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Read the audit log
- Project settings > Automation > open the rule > Audit log
- Check whether it shows Success, No actions performed, Throttled or an error
- No entry at all means the trigger never fired
2. Check enabled state and scope
- Confirm the rule toggle is Enabled
- Check 'Rule details > Scope' includes the project you're testing in
3. Use the right trigger
- For assignee changes use the 'Work item assigned' trigger instead of 'Updated'
- For transitions, confirm the workflow fires the event the trigger listens for
- Add a temporary 'Log action' to confirm the rule runs
4. Fix scheduled JQL rules
- Open the Scheduled trigger
- Untick 'Only include issues that have changed since the last time this rule executed' if you target stale issues
5. Check automation usage
- Admin > Automation > Usage to see how much of the monthly allowance is used
- Reduce noisy rules, or upgrade (Standard 400 steps/user, Premium 750/user per month)
