JQL Error: Field Does Not Exist or You Do Not Have Permission to View It

Workaround available Web Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

This JQL error means Jira can't resolve the field name or the field isn't searchable. Use the JQL name (e.g. affectedVersion), give the custom field a search template, or check Browse permission.

Most likely fix: Use the JQL field name.

Symptoms

Advanced search shows 'Field X does not exist or you do not have permission to view it' or 'The value does not exist for the field fixVersion'.

Why it happens

  • Using the display name instead of the JQL name (e.g. 'Affects versions' instead of affectedVersion)
  • Custom field's search template set to None
  • Wrong function syntax (e.g. linkedIssues)
  • No Browse Projects permission on a project containing the version or field value
  • Field not available in the projects you can see

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Use the JQL field name

    1. Start typing the field in advanced search and pick it from autocomplete
    2. Use affectedVersion, fixVersion, or cf[12345] for custom fields
  2. 2. Give the custom field a search template

    1. Admin: Settings > Issues > Custom fields
    2. Edit the field > Search template > choose a searcher and save
  3. 3. Fix function syntax

    1. Use `issue in linkedIssues(ABC-123)` rather than a field name
  4. 4. Check permissions

    1. For 'value does not exist for the field fixVersion', make sure you have Browse Projects on a project that has that version
