Jira Board Not Showing Issues

Workaround available Web Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Issues missing from a Jira board or backlog are almost always hidden by the board's saved filter, a Kanban sub-filter, an active quick filter, or statuses that aren't mapped to columns.

Most likely fix: Check the board filter.

Symptoms

New issues don't appear on the board or backlog; board is empty though the project has issues; some statuses or sub-tasks never show.

Why it happens

  • Board filter (JQL) excludes the project, issue type or status
  • Kanban sub-filter limited to unreleased versions or an empty fix version
  • A quick filter is still active
  • Issue status not mapped to any board column
  • User lacks Browse permission or an issue security level hides it
  • Scrum backlog: issue is in a sprint or the Sprint field context is misconfigured
  • Data Center: issue not indexed

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Check the board filter

    1. Board > ... > Board settings > General
    2. Click 'Edit filter query' and run it in issue search
    3. If the missing issue doesn't appear in the results, fix the JQL (project, issue types, statuses)
  2. 2. Check the Kanban sub-filter

    1. Board settings > General > Kanban board sub-filter
    2. Use e.g. `fixVersion in unreleasedVersions() OR fixVersion is EMPTY` so unversioned issues show
  3. 3. Clear quick filters

    1. Turn off all quick filters and 'Only my issues' at the top of the board
    2. Clear the search box
  4. 4. Map statuses to columns

    1. Board settings > Columns
    2. Drag any 'Unmapped statuses' into a column
  5. 5. Check permissions

    1. Have an admin use Project settings > Permissions (permission helper) for the affected user and issue
