Jira Email Notifications Not Sending

Workaround available Web, Email Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

If someone doesn't get Jira emails, check their personal notification settings, the project's notification scheme, the event fired by the workflow transition, and their permissions. Suppressed addresses need Atlassian Support.

Most likely fix: Check personal notification settings.

Symptoms

Users don't receive emails for assignments, comments, mentions or status changes; some events notify but others don't; you never get emails about your own changes.

Why it happens

  • 'Send me emails for issue activity' turned off in Personal settings
  • Notification scheme doesn't include the user/role for that event
  • Workflow transition fires 'Generic Event' instead of the expected event
  • User lacks Browse permission or the issue has a security level
  • Email address suppressed after bounces
  • Emails filtered to spam by the mail server
  • User is in a JSM customer organization so gets customer notifications instead
  • 'You make changes to issues' is off, so no emails for your own edits

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Check personal notification settings

    1. Profile picture > Personal settings
    2. Turn on 'Send me emails for issue activity'
    3. Tick 'You make changes to issues' if you want emails for your own changes
    4. Check spam/junk and mail filters (e.g. Outlook rules) for Jira emails
  2. 2. Check the notification scheme

    1. Project settings > Notifications
    2. Find the event (e.g. Issue Assigned, Issue Commented)
    3. Make sure the recipient (Assignee, Watchers, group or role) is listed; add it if not
  3. 3. Check which event the transition fires

    1. Open the workflow and select the transition (e.g. Done)
    2. Check its post function: if it fires 'Generic Event', either change it to the specific event or add recipients to Generic Event in the scheme
  4. 4. Verify permissions

    1. Project settings > Permissions > Browse projects: confirm the user is included
    2. Open the issue and check the lock icon for a security level that excludes them
  5. 5. Ask Atlassian Support to unsuppress the address

    1. If everything is configured correctly and no emails arrive, the address may be suppressed after bounces
    2. Open a support ticket with the user's email; only Atlassian can remove the suppression
