Why Is Jira So Slow? Jira Running Slow Fixes
Ongoing Web (Cloud and Data Center) Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Jira gets slow when boards and searches load too many issues, when marketplace apps or heavy automation add load, or when the browser has extensions and stale cache. Check Atlassian's status page, test in incognito, then trim board filters and remove heavy apps.
Most likely fix: Check whether it's Atlassian's side.
Symptoms
Pages, boards and backlogs take several seconds (sometimes 10-20) to load; opening or creating an issue lags; typing and clicking feel delayed; dashboards spin.
Why it happens
- An Atlassian Cloud incident or degraded performance
- Boards and backlogs loading thousands of issues, including old done ones
- Epics with very large child counts or issues with thousands of comments
- Marketplace apps adding scripts and server load (stuck threads on Data Center)
- Automation rules that update large numbers of open issues
- Browser extensions, stale cache or an outdated browser
- Data Center only: outdated search index, undersized server/JVM or slow database connection
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Check whether it's Atlassian's side
- Open status.atlassian.com and check Jira for an active incident
- If an incident is listed, wait for the fix instead of changing settings
- Ask a colleague whether the slowness is site-wide or just you
2. Test a clean browser session
- Open your Jira site in an incognito/private window with extensions disabled
- If it's fast there, disable extensions one by one in your normal profile
- Clear cache and cookies for your Atlassian site and update the browser
3. Make boards load fewer issues
- Open the board > ... > Board settings > General
- Edit the board filter (and the Kanban sub-filter) so old resolved issues are excluded, e.g. add `AND (resolution = EMPTY OR resolved >= -14d)`
- Split a huge board into per-team boards
- Archive or close out stale epics and sprints
4. Find a heavy app or automation
- Admins: temporarily disable recently installed or updated marketplace apps and compare load times
- Review automation rules that run on every issue update or bulk-edit many issues; narrow their JQL or schedule them off-hours
- Avoid installing or updating apps during peak hours
5. Data Center: re-index and check resources
- Run a full re-index from Administration > System > Indexing
- Check server CPU, memory and JVM heap sizing against your user and issue count
- Use Atlassian's troubleshooting for long page loads and database connection latency
