1Password Autofill Not Working

Quick answer

Usually the extension has lost its connection to the desktop app, the saved login has the wrong website address, or the page uses an unusual form. Unlock the app, check the item's URL, and fill manually from the extension once.

Symptoms

The 1Password icon doesn't appear in login fields, the extension shows items but nothing fills, only the username fills, or Cmd/Ctrl+\ does nothing.

Why it happens

  • Browser extension locked or disconnected from the desktop app
  • Saved Login item has the wrong or old website URL
  • Site uses multi-step or non-standard login forms
  • Outdated app, extension or browser after an auto-update
  • Browser's built-in password manager competing for the field

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Unlock the app, then fill from the toolbar

    1. Open and unlock the 1Password desktop app
    2. Click the 1Password icon in the browser toolbar
    3. Select the Login item for the site and click Autofill

  2. 2. Fix the website address on the item

    1. Open the Login item in 1Password and click Edit
    2. Set the website field to the actual sign-in page URL (or add it as an extra website)
    3. Save and reload the page

  3. 3. Reconnect the extension to the app

    1. Right-click the extension icon > Settings
    2. Under General, turn off 'Integrate with 1Password app'
    3. Sign out and back in to the extension, then turn the integration back on

  4. 4. Restart in the right order

    1. Quit all browsers
    2. Quit 1Password completely from the menu bar or system tray
    3. Open and unlock 1Password first, then open the browser

  5. 5. Update everything and disable the browser's password manager

    1. Update the 1Password app, the extension and the browser
    2. In the browser's settings, turn off its built-in 'Offer to save passwords' and autofill
