1Password High CPU Usage and Slow App
Workaround available macOS, Windows Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
1Password 8 (Electron) can spike CPU or freeze, often tied to Universal Autofill or the browser integration. Update, disable hardware acceleration and, if needed, fully reinstall the app.
Most likely fix: Quit and update.
Symptoms
Fans spin up, '1Password Helper (Renderer)' uses high CPU or memory, the window lags or freezes when searching.
Why it happens
- Universal Autofill regression stuck in a loop (fixed in 8.9.4 beta, recurred later)
- Firefox extension integration spawning processes
- Hardware acceleration issues
- Corrupted app support files
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Quit and update
- Quit 1Password from the menu bar/system tray or Activity Monitor
- Install the latest 1Password version
2. Turn off hardware acceleration
- 1Password > Settings > Advanced
- Turn off 'Use hardware acceleration' and restart the app
3. Test without browser integration
- Temporarily disable 'Integrate with 1Password app' in the extension
