1Password Browser Extension Not Connecting to App

The extension can't talk to the desktop app, so it won't unlock with the app or Touch ID/Windows Hello. Turn on 'Connect with 1Password in the browser' in the app, toggle integration in the extension, then fully quit and reopen both.

Symptoms

Extension shows 'Connection problem', asks for the account password even though the app is unlocked, or doesn't unlock when you unlock the app.

Why it happens

  • 'Connect with 1Password in the browser' turned off in the app
  • App and extension versions out of sync after an update
  • Unsupported or unsigned browser (Mac)
  • Stale background process after sleep or update

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Enable the browser connection in the app

    1. Open 1Password > Settings > Browser
    2. Turn on 'Connect with 1Password in the browser'
    3. Quit 1Password completely and reopen it

  2. 2. Toggle integration in the extension

    1. Right-click the extension icon > Settings
    2. Turn off 'Integrate with 1Password app', sign in to the extension
    3. Turn the integration back on

  3. 3. Update the app, extension and browser

    1. Check for updates in the 1Password app
    2. Update the browser and confirm the extension updated

  4. 4. Reboot the computer

    1. Quit browsers and 1Password
    2. Restart the computer, unlock 1Password, then open the browser

  5. 5. Add the browser as trusted (Mac)

    1. In 1Password > Settings > Browser, add the browser under additional trusted browsers (must be code-signed)
