1Password Touch ID / Face ID Not Working

Workaround available iOS, macOS, Windows, Android Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Biometric unlock stops after updates, restarts or when the app's periodic password reminder is due. Update 1Password, re-enable biometrics in the app and OS, and enter your account password once to re-arm it.

Most likely fix: Update 1Password.

Symptoms

Face ID or Touch ID prompt succeeds but the vault stays locked, the biometric option disappears, or 1Password always asks for the account password.

Why it happens

  • Bug in a specific 1Password release (e.g. the Face ID bug fixed in 8.10.0)
  • App restarted or biometric check failed, so the account password is required
  • Biometric unlock disabled in 1Password or in iOS/macOS settings
  • Periodic 'confirm account password' reminder is due

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update 1Password

    1. Install the latest version from the App Store, Play Store or in-app updater
    2. Several biometric unlock bugs were fixed in later releases
  2. 2. Re-enable biometric unlock

    1. Open 1Password > Settings > Security
    2. Turn Face ID/Touch ID/Windows Hello off and back on
    3. On iOS also check Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Other Apps > 1Password
  3. 3. Enter your account password once

    1. Unlock with your account password after a restart or failed biometric
    2. Biometrics work again until the reminder interval (2 weeks / 30 days) passes
  4. 4. Report it with diagnostics if it persists

    1. Create a diagnostics report from 1Password
    2. Email it to 1Password support with your OS and app version
