1Password Passkey Not Saving or Not Working

Workaround available Chrome, Brave, Safari, iOS, Android, Windows Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Passkey save failures are usually version bugs in 1Password, the browser or the OS. Update the 1Password app, extension and OS, and make sure the browser's own passkey prompt isn't taking over.

Most likely fix: Update 1Password and the OS.

Symptoms

1Password doesn't offer to save a passkey, the site says the passkey wasn't created, Windows Hello or the OS prompt appears instead, or the passkey won't sign you in.

Why it happens

  • Bugs fixed in later 1Password releases (e.g. Brave/Wells Fargo issue fixed in 8.10.80)
  • OS bugs such as iOS 17.1 blocking passkey saving in apps (fixed in iOS 17.2)
  • Browser or Windows Hello intercepting the passkey request
  • On Mac, 1Password works through the browser extension, not macOS AutoFill

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update 1Password and the OS

    1. Update the 1Password app and browser extension
    2. Install the latest iOS/macOS/Windows update
  2. 2. Let 1Password handle the passkey prompt

    1. Make sure the 1Password extension is unlocked before creating the passkey
    2. Turn off the browser's built-in password/passkey manager
  3. 3. Use Safari or the browser extension instead of system AutoFill (Mac)

    1. Install the 1Password extension for your browser
    2. Create the passkey with the extension unlocked
  4. 4. Send a diagnostics report

    1. In the extension, create a diagnostics report
    2. Send it to 1Password support with the site name and versions
