LumaFusion 'There Was an Error Reading Media in Your Project'

Workaround available iPad, iPhone, Mac Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

This export error means LumaFusion can't decode one of your clips during export. Switching the export codec (for example H.264 to H.265) usually gets past it; otherwise Optimize and Consolidate or transcode the problem clip.

Most likely fix: Change the export codec.

Symptoms

Export stops with 'There was an error reading media in your project', sometimes on a clip that plays normally in the timeline.

Why it happens

  • A clip in a codec or format iOS decodes poorly
  • Action camera or drone footage
  • Corrupted or partially downloaded media

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Change the export codec

    1. Open the export settings
    2. Switch the codec, e.g. from H.264 to H.265 (HEVC)
    3. Export again
  2. 2. Optimize and Consolidate

    1. In the Project Manager select the project
    2. Run Optimize and Consolidate to re-encode media for your device
    3. Export again
  3. 3. Transcode the problem clip with HandBrake

    1. On a computer, open the clip in HandBrake
    2. Use MP4, H.264 (x264), Constant Quality RF 22, same frame rate (constant)
    3. Add keyint=60 in Additional Options (about 2x the frame rate)
    4. Re-import and replace the clip
