LumaFusion Missing Media Error
Workaround available iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
LumaFusion shows missing media when it can't reach a clip's source, usually an external drive, cloud service or cached file that was cleaned up. Reconnect the source or re-import the file, then Optimize and Consolidate so the media is stored with the project.
Most likely fix: Reconnect the original source.
Symptoms
Clips show as missing in the timeline, a 'missing media, reimport the file' message appears, or export fails because of missing media.
Why it happens
- Media linked from an external drive that's unplugged or disconnected
- Media from an online service that's no longer available
- 'Cleanup All Cached Media' removed downloaded media that can't be re-downloaded
- Project moved to a new device without its media
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Reconnect the original source
- Plug the external drive back in or sign in to the cloud service
- Reopen the project so LumaFusion can find or re-download the media
2. Re-import and replace the clip
- Import the original file again from Photos or Files
- Replace the missing clip on the timeline
- Export again
3. Consolidate media into the project
- Open the Project Manager
- Run Optimize and Consolidate so all media is copied locally
- Avoid editing directly from a USB drive that may disconnect
4. Don't clear cached media you can't re-download
- In Help and Settings, use 'Cleanup Unused Cached Media' instead of 'Cleanup All Cached Media'
5. Move projects as Project Packages
- Use Export > LumaFusion Project Package to move or back up a project with its media
