PowerDirector Keeps Crashing or Freezing

Symptoms

PowerDirector freezes, hangs or closes on startup, while adding titles or effects, changing speed or scrubbing the timeline. Sometimes unsaved work is lost.

Why it happens

• Outdated PowerDirector or graphics driver
• PC below minimum requirements
• Low free drive space
• Shadow file option enabled
• Timeline preview quality set too high
• Antivirus or other apps conflicting
• Not running as Administrator
• Damaged installation
• Duet Display or USB display adapters

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

1. 1. Update PowerDirector and the GPU driver

   1. Install the latest PowerDirector update
   2. Install the latest NVIDIA, AMD or Intel driver for your card

2. 2. Turn off shadow files

   1. Open Preferences > Performance
   2. Untick the shadow file option
   3. Keep it off when importing new clips

3. 3. Lower preview quality

   1. In the preview window open Set preview quality/display options
   2. Set Timeline Preview Quality to HD or lower

4. 4. Free disk space and close other apps

   1. Leave plenty of free space on the drive for buffering
   2. Close other programs including antivirus, then restart PowerDirector

5. 5. Run as Administrator

   1. Log in with an Administrator account so PowerDirector can access the files it needs

6. 6. Remove display tools

   1. Uninstall Duet Display and unplug USB display adapters
   2. Connect the monitor directly and restart

7. 7. Clean reinstall

   1. Uninstall PowerDirector from Control Panel
   2. Restart, close other apps, reinstall
