PowerDirector Preview Lagging and Choppy Playback

Quick answer
Timeline preview lags when the PC can't decode 4K or effects in real time. Lower Preview Quality, use Render Preview, or enable shadow files for 2K/4K clips; the final export is unaffected.

Symptoms
Playback stutters, freezes, drops to a slideshow or audio goes out of sync in the preview window, especially with 4K clips or stabilizer effects.
Why it happens
- High-resolution (2K/4K) footage
- Effects such as the video stabilizer
- Preview quality set to Ultra HD/Full HD
- Weak GPU or outdated driver
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Lower preview quality
- Click the menu icon at the bottom right of the preview window
- Open Preview Quality and choose HD or High
2. Render the preview
- Click Render Preview below the preview window
- A green line marks rendered parts
- Right-click the timeline > Select Range to render only a section; re-render after edits
3. Generate shadow files for 4K
- Gear icon > Preferences > Performance
- Enable shadow files and pick a shadow file resolution
- Wait for the blue icon on the clip thumbnail in My Media
4. Use Non Real-time Preview to inspect effects
- Preview window menu > Non Real-time Preview
- Playback is slower and muted but every frame renders
5. Turn off the stabilizer while editing
- Apply stabilization last, after the cut is finished
