Snapseed Keeps Crashing or Freezing

Ongoing iOS, iPadOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Snapseed crashes and freezes are mostly triggered by large or RAW photos and low free memory. Update to the latest 4.x version, restart the phone, clear the cache on Android, and reinstall if it still freezes.

Most likely fix: Update Snapseed.

Symptoms

The app closes when you open a photo, freezes on the loading spinner, tools stop responding mid-edit, or the whole phone hangs while Snapseed is open.

Why it happens

  • Very large or RAW photos on a phone with little free RAM
  • Older Snapseed build with known stability bugs (4.1.6 and 4.1.7 were stability releases)
  • Corrupted app cache or data (Android)
  • Too many apps running in the background
  • Old OS version

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update Snapseed

    1. Open the App Store or Google Play, search Snapseed and tap Update
    2. If Google Play won't offer the update: Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage > Clear data, restart, then try again
  2. 2. Force close and restart the phone

    1. Swipe Snapseed away from recent apps (Android: Settings > Apps > Snapseed > Force stop)
    2. Restart the phone to free memory
    3. Open Snapseed again before opening other apps
  3. 3. Clear Snapseed cache (Android)

    1. Settings > Apps > Snapseed > Storage
    2. Tap Clear cache; if crashes continue, tap Clear storage/data
  4. 4. Test with a JPEG instead of RAW

    1. Open a normal JPEG photo
    2. If that works, the crash is RAW-specific; see the RAW not opening guide
  5. 5. Reinstall Snapseed

    1. Uninstall Snapseed
    2. Restart the phone
    3. Install it again from the official store
