Snapseed Reduces Photo Resolution or Quality
Ongoing iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Snapseed saves at the original resolution only up to what the device can process: about 20 MP on most phones and 8-10 MP on some older ones. Photos from 48 MP+ cameras come out smaller; check the export size and format options and keep the original.
Most likely fix: Check export size and format options.
Symptoms
Exported photos have fewer pixels or a smaller file size than the original, or look softer/noisier when zoomed in.
Why it happens
- Device processing cap (20 MP on most devices, 8 MP on some older Android phones)
- Export size or format option set to a smaller size or lower JPEG quality
- Heavy sharpening/structure adding visible noise
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Check export size and format options
- Open Snapseed's settings or export options
- Set image size to the largest / do not resize
- Choose the highest JPEG quality (or PNG if offered)
2. Keep the original for full resolution
- Use Save a copy or Export so the original high-resolution file stays untouched
- Do final large-format edits in a desktop editor if you need more than ~20 MP
3. Reduce sharpening and structure
- Lower Details > Structure and Sharpening if the export looks noisy when zoomed
