VN Black Screen or Missing Clips
Workaround available iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Black clips or 'missing' media in VN mean the app can't reach the original file, usually because it was moved, deleted or only stored in the cloud. Restore the file to the device or replace the clip before exporting.
Most likely fix: Download cloud clips to the device.
Symptoms
Clips appear black in preview, the project says media is missing although the video is still in your gallery, or the export turns black partway through.
Why it happens
- Original clip moved, renamed or deleted
- Clip stored only in iCloud or Google Photos
- Unsupported codec or file format
- Reverse or effect processing failed on the clip
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Download cloud clips to the device
- Open the clip in Photos or Google Photos and save/download it locally
- Reopen the VN project
2. Replace the missing clip
- Tap the black clip on the timeline and replace it with the original file
- Check timing afterwards, since replacing can shift the timeline
3. Convert unsupported files
- Convert unusual formats to standard H.264 MP4 and import again
4. Check the full timeline before export
- Scrub through the whole project for black sections, since exports fail or turn black when a source is missing
