Box File Size Limit (File Too Large to Upload)
Workaround available Web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Box caps the size of each file by plan: 250 MB free, 2 GB Business Starter, 5 GB Personal Pro and Business, 15 GB Business Plus, 50 GB Enterprise, 150 GB Enterprise Plus, 500 GB Enterprise Advanced. In shared folders, the folder owner's plan sets the limit.
Most likely fix: Check your exact limit.
Symptoms
A file is rejected as too large even though you have unlimited storage, or uploads work in your own folders but fail in a folder someone shared with you.
Why it happens
- File exceeds your plan's maximum upload size
- Uploading into a folder owned by a user on a lower plan (for example a free 250 MB owner)
- App-specific caps: Box mobile app and Box Sync 15 GB, email upload 50 MB
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Check your exact limit
- Log in to Box, click your avatar > Account Settings
- Scroll to Account Details and read 'Max file size'
2. Upload to a folder you own
- Upload the file to your own folder, then share it with the collaborators
- Or ask the folder owner to upgrade their plan
3. Use the web app or Box Drive instead of mobile or email
- Files over 15 GB can't go through the mobile app or Box Sync
- Email uploads stop at 50 MB, so upload larger files in the browser
4. Compress or split the file
- Zip the file or split archives into parts below your plan's cap
5. Move to a higher plan if you regularly exceed the cap
- Business Plus allows 15 GB, Enterprise 50 GB, Enterprise Plus 150 GB, and Enterprise Advanced 500 GB per file
