Box Drive Offline: 'Make Available Offline' Missing or Not Working
Workaround available Windows, macOS Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Box works offline only for folders you mark in Box Drive. Right-click a folder and choose 'Make Available Offline' or 'Always keep on device'. Single files can't be marked, and you need download permission. If the option is missing, update Box Drive or sign out and back in.
Most likely fix: Mark the folder for offline use.
Symptoms
'Unable to Open File' when offline, no offline option in the right-click menu, or offline downloads stopping partway.
Why it happens
- Files are online-only by default in Box Drive
- Trying to mark a single file instead of a folder
- No download permission on the folder
- Not enough free disk space to finish the offline download
- Logging out mid-download, which removes all offline content
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Mark the folder for offline use
- Open your Box folder in Finder or File Explorer
- Right-click the folder and choose 'Make Available Offline' (or 'Always keep on device')
- On Windows 11, choose 'Show more options' first if the item isn't visible
2. Put single files in their own folder
- Box Drive only marks folders offline, so move the file into a folder and mark that folder
3. Make the option appear
- Quit and update Box Drive
- Sign out and back in, or restart the computer
4. Finish downloads before going offline
- Wait for green check marks on offline files
- If downloads fail for space, free disk space and click Retry All under Gear > 'Error updating an item'
- Don't log out until downloads finish, because logging out deletes offline content
