Box 'Account Storage Limit Reached' Error
Workaround available Web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
This error appears when the folder owner's account is out of storage or your admin set a quota on you, even on 'unlimited' plans. Storage counts against the owner of the folder you're uploading to.
Most likely fix: Check who owns the folder.
Symptoms
Uploads fail with 'Account storage limit reached' or 'Storage Limit Exceeded', sometimes while your own usage looks low or your company plan is unlimited.
Why it happens
- Uploading into a folder owned by a free (10 GB) or Personal Pro (100 GB) account
- Admin-set per-user storage quota on a business plan
- Business Starter plans include 100 GB, not unlimited storage
- Your personal free account is full
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Check who owns the folder
- Open the folder on box.com and check the owner in the sharing details
- If the owner is on a free or personal plan, ask them to free space or upgrade, or move the content to a folder you own
2. Ask your Box admin to raise your quota
- Business and Enterprise plans are unlimited, but admins can cap users
- Ask the main admin to modify your storage limit
3. Free up space in your own account
- Delete or move large files you no longer need
- Check your usage under Account Settings
4. Contact Box support if the numbers don't add up
- If you are clearly under quota, open a ticket at support.box.com; community threads show this needs account-level investigation
