Box Upload Failed
Workaround available Web Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Box web uploads usually fail because of browser cache or extensions, a file name Box can't accept, a file over your plan's size limit, or a firewall, proxy or VPN. Update and clear the browser, check the name and size, then test another network.
Most likely fix: Update and clear your browser.
Symptoms
Uploads stop with 'Something went wrong with the upload', 'An error occurred with the upload. Please refresh the page and try again', 'Value must be greater than or equal to 0', or 'Some uploads failed'.
Why it happens
- Outdated browser or corrupted browser cache
- File or folder names over 255 characters, or with / \ < > : " | ? * or leading/trailing spaces
- File larger than the plan's (or folder owner's) maximum file size
- Invalid or empty created/modified timestamps on the file
- Firewall, antivirus or proxy blocking the upload
- Active files in use, such as an open Outlook PST
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Update and clear your browser
- Update Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge to the latest version
- Clear the browser cache and reload box.com
- Try another browser or computer to isolate the issue
2. Rename the file or folder
- Keep names to 255 characters or fewer
- Remove / \ < > : " | ? * and leading or trailing spaces
- On Windows, shorten deep folder paths; on Mac, delete .DS_Store and ._ files
3. Check the file size limit
- Click your avatar > Account Settings > Account Details and read 'Max file size'
- If you are uploading into someone else's shared folder, their plan's limit applies
4. Fix invalid timestamps
- If you see 'Value must be greater than or equal to 0', copy the file to create fresh created/modified dates and upload the copy
5. Rule out firewall, proxy and VPN
- Temporarily disable the firewall or antivirus, or add Box as a trusted site
- Disconnect the VPN or try a wired connection
- On an office network, ask IT to check the proxy configuration
6. Switch upload method
- Try File Upload instead of Folder Upload, or the other way round
- To upload an empty folder, drag and drop it into the Box window
- Copy files that are in use (like a PST) and upload the copy
