LastPass Free Not Working on Phone (One Device Type Limit)

Ongoing Windows, Mac, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

LastPass Free only works on one device type, computers or mobile. If it stopped working on your phone or PC, that's the restriction, not a bug. Switch your active type (limited number of times), upgrade to Premium, or move to a manager with a free cross-device plan.

Most likely fix: Switch your active device type.

Symptoms

LastPass Free asks you to upgrade or blocks access on your phone after you used it on a computer (or vice versa).

Why it happens

  • Free plan restricted to one device type since March 2021
  • Active device type was set by the first login on the other device

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Switch your active device type

    1. When prompted on the blocked device, choose to make this device type active
    2. Note that switches are limited and the other type will stop working
  2. 2. Use the web vault as a stopgap

    1. Log in at lastpass.com from the other device's browser to look up a password (behaviour may vary)
  3. 3. Upgrade or migrate

    1. Upgrade to Premium for all-device access
    2. Or export your vault (see our export guide) and import it into Bitwarden or Proton Pass, whose free plans sync across devices
