LastPass MFA Reset Locked Me Out

Workaround available All platforms Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

If LastPass keeps asking you to reset or re-verify MFA and won't let you into the vault, use the 'lost your authenticator' email flow to disable MFA, then re-enrol it once you're logged in.

Most likely fix: Disable MFA by email.

Symptoms

After a forced MFA re-enrolment or a new phone, LastPass loops back to the MFA reset screen, rejects valid authenticator codes, or shows 'Something went wrong' at the MFA step on iOS.

Why it happens

  • Forced MFA re-enrolment during a security upgrade (as in 2023)
  • Authenticator moved to a new phone without transferring LastPass
  • Phone clock out of sync so codes are rejected
  • Business admin policy requiring MFA

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Disable MFA by email

    1. On the MFA prompt choose 'Lost your authenticator?' or similar
    2. Request the email to disable multifactor authentication
    3. Open the link from the same browser, log in, then set up MFA again
  2. 2. Fix authenticator time sync

    1. On your phone set date and time to automatic
    2. Retry the code
  3. 3. Use a recovery device or backup method

    1. Log in from a trusted device where LastPass is already signed in
    2. Re-enrol the authenticator from Account settings > Multifactor options
  4. 4. Business users: ask your admin

    1. LastPass admins can reset MFA for a user from the Admin Console
