Cheap paid plans and a familiar interface, but the 2022 breach (stolen encrypted vaults, UK ICO fine, class-action settlement), recurring extension outages and logouts, a crippled free plan and weak support make it hard to recommend over Bitwarden or 1Password.

Overview

LastPass is a cloud password manager for individuals, families and businesses, with browser extensions, mobile apps and an admin console for teams. It is cheap and familiar, but its reputation never recovered from the 2022 breach (encrypted vault backups stolen, a £1.2M UK ICO fine in 2025 and a $24.5M class-action settlement). Users also complain about flaky autofill, extensions that keep logging out, a free plan locked to one device type, and hard-to-reach support.

Security3 signals
Is LastPass safe after the 2022 breach?

In 2022 attackers got in through a developer laptop, then a senior engineer's home computer, and copied encrypted customer vault backups plus unencrypted metadata such as names, emails, phone numbers and saved site URLs. Vaults protected by weak master passwords can be brute-forced offline, and researchers have linked later cryptocurrency thefts to cracked LastPass vaults. This is the number-one reason people leave.

LastPass fined £1.2 million by UK ICO and settled class action for $24.5M

The UK Information Commissioner's Office fined LastPass UK £1.2 million in late 2025, saying its security measures were not robust enough and that up to 1.6 million UK users were affected. Separately, LastPass settled a US class action for $24.5 million over losses from the breach. The ICO said it found no evidence passwords were decrypted by LastPass's failure itself.

Impact: 8/10Reported 7xNegativevia Other (5 sources)regret after purchase
Forced MFA reset locked users out of their vaults

During a 2023 security upgrade LastPass forced users to log in again and re-enrol MFA. Many got stuck in reset loops and were locked out of their vaults, and because contacting support required logging in, they couldn't easily get help.

Impact: 8/10Reported 5xNegativevia Other (3 sources)workflow failure
Pricing2 signals
LastPass free plan only works on computer OR mobile

Since March 2021 LastPass Free is limited to one device type: computers (all desktop browsers) or mobile (phones, tablets). Switching the active type is capped, and the other category stops working. Many free users left for Bitwarden, whose free plan syncs across all devices.

Impact: 8/10Reported 9xNegativevia Other (6 sources)feature removal
LastPass refund policy - prepaid annual billing, no month-to-month

Paid personal plans are billed annually up front and LastPass treats personal payments as non-refundable; cancelling generally only stops the next renewal. Users who forget the auto-renewal or bought through the App Store or Google Play must cancel there, and LastPass support can't reverse those charges.

Impact: 6/10Reported 6xNegativevia Other (3 sources)hidden costs
Reliability5 signals
LastPass autofill not working in Chrome, Edge and Safari

Autofill stops filling, only fills the username, or the icon disappears from login fields, often right after a browser or extension update. In April 2026 a Chrome 147 change broke LastPass site launch and autofill in Chrome and Chromium-based Edge for roughly 17 days, according to outage trackers.

Impact: 8/10Reported 9xNegativevia Other (6 sources)workflow failure
LastPass login outages - Edge extension release broke sign-in in March 2026

LastPass's status page logged login problems in March 2026 caused by a Microsoft Edge extension release (resolved March 25 with a published root-cause analysis), plus other login and admin-console incidents. When LastPass can't log you in, you can't reach any saved password.

Impact: 8/10Reported 6xNegativevia Other (3 sources)workflow failure
Why does LastPass keep logging me out?

Community threads report the browser extension logging out every few minutes across Chrome, Edge and Firefox even with auto-logout disabled. Causes include the browser clearing cookies on exit, 'share login state between browsers', privacy extensions, and a 2026 bug where business users with the 'log out on browser close' policy were logged out unexpectedly (fixed in extension 4.152.1).

Impact: 7/10Reported 8xNegativevia Other (5 sources)workflow failure
LastPass vault not loading or stuck on spinning wheel

The master password is accepted but the vault never loads, shows a spinning wheel, or logs out immediately. Corrupted local extension data, conflicting extensions (VPN, ad blockers) and server-side incidents are the usual causes.

Impact: 7/10Reported 5xNegativevia Other (4 sources)workflow failure
LastPass export gives an empty CSV file

Users trying to leave LastPass report the vault export producing a 0 KB or blank CSV, menu instructions that don't match the 'new experience' UI, and form-fill data needing a separate export. Exporting from the browser extension instead of the web vault usually works.

Impact: 6/10Reported 5xNegativevia Other (4 sources)migration pain
Usability1 signal
LastPass master password not working / account recovery fails

LastPass cannot view or reset your master password. Recovery only works through a one-time password stored on a computer where you previously used the extension, or by reverting a password change made in the last 30 days. Users report recovery links failing, new passwords being rejected after recovery, and iOS recovery erroring at the MFA step.

Impact: 9/10Reported 7xNegativevia Other (4 sources)workflow failure
Support1 signal
LastPass support hard to reach - free users get self-service only

Free accounts get self-service support only, and paying users describe slow, scripted responses, trouble finding a way to request refunds, and lost cancellation requests. Locked-out users often can't open a ticket because the support center sits behind login.

Impact: 7/10Reported 7xNegativevia Other (4 sources)support breakdown
Mobile1 signal
LastPass Android and iPhone autofill not working in apps

On Android the accessibility autofill service stops working on some devices (LastPass shipped fixes in app versions 4.5.2555 and 4.5.2600), and toggling it often only helps until the next day. On iPhone, users report LastPass autofill not appearing in apps even with Keychain turned off.

Business SSO capped at 3 apps unless you buy Business Max

LastPass Business includes SSO for only 3 apps and no MFA for SSO/cloud apps; unlimited SSO apps, advanced MFA and SaaS monitoring require the higher Business Max tier. Teams (up to 50 users) has no groups, SSO or directory integrations at all.

Who Should Use This?

Neutral

Budget families already using LastPass

Families is cheap for six users and switching is effort. If you stay, use a long new master password and rotate important passwords created before 2022.

Small teams under 50 users

Teams is inexpensive but has no SSO, groups or directory sync. Bitwarden Teams or 1Password Teams are comparable alternatives.

Mid-size businesses needing SSO

Business has good admin policies but caps SSO at 3 apps; you need Business Max for full SSO and advanced MFA.

Non-technical users who want simple autofill

The interface is easy, but autofill breaks after browser updates and frequent logouts frustrate less technical users.

Avoid

Security-conscious users

Encrypted vaults were stolen in 2022 and weak master passwords can still be cracked offline; regulators fined LastPass over it. Bitwarden or 1Password have cleaner records.

Free users on phone and computer

LastPass Free only works on one device type. Bitwarden Free and Proton Pass Free sync across all devices.

Crypto holders storing seed phrases

Researchers have linked crypto thefts to vaults cracked from the 2022 breach data. Keep seed phrases out of any cloud vault, and especially out of an old LastPass vault.

Users who need reliable account recovery

Recovery only works from a computer where you used the extension before; LastPass cannot reset your master password.

Regret Patterns

Common buyer's remorse scenarios reported by users.

Stayed after the breach, then had to rotate every password

Users who kept LastPass after 2022 later realised their old vault copy was in attackers' hands and had to change hundreds of passwords anyway, usually while migrating to another manager.

Months after the breach disclosure
Reported 8x
Free plan stopped working on the second device

Free users suddenly lost access on their phone or computer after the one-device-type rule kicked in, and felt pushed into paying.

After first login on the other device type
Reported 7x
Paid annual renewal they couldn't refund

Users who forgot the auto-renewal, or meant to switch to Bitwarden, found personal plans are prepaid and treated as non-refundable.

At annual renewal
Reported 5x
Locked out with no way to reach support

MFA reset loops or failed master-password recovery left users without vault access, and the support center required logging in.

After a forced security change or password change
Reported 5x
Autofill broke after a browser update

A Chrome or Edge update silently broke the extension and users had to copy passwords by hand for days or weeks.

After browser auto-updates
Reported 6x
Export to a new manager came out empty

When finally leaving, users got a blank CSV from the web vault and had to find the extension export path.

When migrating away
Reported 4x

When It Breaks Down

Scenarios where this product tends to fail users.

Weak or reused master password from before 2022
security

Stolen encrypted vault backups can be brute-forced offline; a short master password offers little protection now.

Browser update ships a breaking change
reliability

Chrome 147 broke autofill and site launch for roughly 17 days in 2026; Edge extension releases have broken login.

Free account used on both phone and laptop
pricing

Only one device type works; the other stops getting access.

Forgotten master password on a new device
usability

Account recovery only works from a computer where the extension was used before; on mobile or a new PC you may have to reset the account and lose the vault.

Business needs SSO for many apps
integrations

Business caps SSO at 3 apps; unlimited SSO and MFA for cloud apps require Business Max.

Privacy browser settings clear cookies on exit
reliability

The extension logs out every time the browser closes or every few minutes.
