LastPass Master Password Not Working

Symptoms

LastPass says 'invalid password', the password works on one device but not another, or recovery succeeds but the new password is rejected.

Why it happens

  • Typo, Caps Lock or keyboard layout
  • Logging in with a different email address
  • Recently changed master password not synced to this device
  • Corrupted extension data
  • Recovery attempted on a device without the stored one-time recovery password

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Rule out typos and the wrong email

    1. Type the master password in a text editor and paste it in to check for typos
    2. Check Caps Lock and keyboard layout
    3. Confirm the account email, and check spam folders for LastPass verification emails

  2. 2. Try the web vault or another browser

    1. Log in at lastpass.com in a private window with extensions disabled
    2. If that works, uninstall and reinstall the extension

  3. 3. Get your password hint

    1. On the login screen choose 'Forgot your password?'
    2. Request your hint by email

  4. 4. Use account recovery on a known computer

    1. Use a computer and browser where you previously logged in with the LastPass extension
    2. Choose 'Forgot your password?' > account recovery and follow the email link
    3. Set a new master password (recovery is not available in the mobile apps)

  5. 5. Revert a recent password change

    1. If you changed the master password in the last 30 days, use LastPass's revert option from the email/help link
    2. Log in with the previous master password (this cannot be undone)

  6. 6. Reset the account as a last resort

    1. Use LastPass's account reset only if nothing else works
    2. This deletes all vault data but keeps your email usable with LastPass
